Old and New in 2014!

 Enchanted greetings fairy-tale enthusiasts!

Well, people are getting prepared for semester one at Monash University, and we at the Monash Fairy Tale Salon are no exception.

We met this week to discuss our goals for 2014 and came up with a theme for the year: old and new! We’ve looked at many an old fairy tale in the years we’ve been meeting so we wanted to focus on fairy tales that have been revised and reimagined in more recent times. This will mean a lot of comparing of different versions of fairy tales through print, television and film. There are some great ideas floating around at the moment so stay tuned!

In our discussions, we toyed with the idea of hosting another fairy-tale event this year. I do love when we can open things up to a larger crowd. (Plus, fairy-tale costumes and cupcakes often make their way into these events, and who doesn’t love that?) Things aren’t 100% confirmed but keep an eye on the blog.

We are also looking forward to the release of Maleficent, in which Angelina Jolie will portray the villain from Disney’s 1959 animated film Sleeping Beauty. I actually re-watched the Disney classic a couple of weeks ago – love the horns! I believe Maleficent is coming out around mid-year. Plus, I’ve heard that there are many more fairy-tale film adaptations on the horizon.

It’s going to be a good year!

Optimistically yours,

Belinda Calderone

  1. Thanks for the blog, Belinda! I’m looking forward to a lovely fairy tale year too. Are you planning to come to the conference in Sydney in June? It’d be great to meet a few other fairy tale enthusiasts?

  2. Thank you, Kate! A few of us from the group, myself included, have sent submissions for the conference in Sydney. Hopefully we get to go! It would be lovely to meet and discuss all things fairy tale.
